driveinasystemlikeamasterkey.Theadministratorsetsthemasterpassword;thenassignauser
passwordforeachcomputerinthenetwork.Theusercanthenchangetheuserpasswordasdesired,but
theadministratorstillcangetaccessbyusingthemasterpassword.
Whenamasterharddiskpasswordisset,onlytheadministratorcanremovetheuserharddiskpassword.
Settingaharddiskpassword
Beforeyoustart,printtheseinstructions.
Tosetaharddiskpassword,dothefollowing:
1.Restartthecomputer.Whenthelogoscreenisdisplayed,pressF1tostarttheThinkPadSetupprogram.
2.SelectSecurity➙Password➙HardDisk1Passwordbyusingthedirectionalkeys.
3.Apasswordwindowisdisplayed.YouarepromptedtoselectUserorUser+Master.SelectUserif
youwanttosetonlyoneharddiskpassword.SelectUser+Masterifyouwanttosetauserharddisk
passwordandamasterharddiskpassword,forexampleifyouareanadministratororasupervisor.
•IfyouselectUser,dothefollowing:
a.Whenawindowfortypingthenewpasswordopens,typeyournewpasswordintheEnterNew
PasswordeldandpressEnter.
b.IntheConrmNewPasswordeld,retypethepasswordyoujustenteredandpressEnter.
•IfyouselectUser+Master,dothefollowing:
a.First,setauserharddiskpassword.Whenamessagewindowpromptsyoutosettheuserhard
diskpassword,pressEntertocontinue.TypeyournewuserharddiskpasswordintheEnter
NewPasswordeldandpressEnter.RetypethepasswordintheConrmNewPassword
eldandpressEnter.
b.Then,setamasterharddiskpassword.Whenamessagewindowpromptsyoutosetthemaster
harddiskpassword.PressEntertocontinue.Typeyournewmasterharddiskpasswordinthe
EnterNewPasswordeldandpressEnter.RetypethepasswordintheConrmNewPassword
eldandpressEnter.
4.ASetupNoticewindowisdisplayed.PressEntertocontinue.
5.PressF10.ASetupConrmationwindowisdisplayed.SelectY estosavethecongurationchanges
andexit.
Thenexttimeyouturnonyourcomputer,typetheuserormasterharddiskpasswordtostartyourcomputer
andaccesstheoperatingsystem.
Changingorremovingaharddiskpassword
Tochangeorremovetheharddiskpassword,dothefollowing:
•IfyouareinUser+Masterharddiskmode,youcanselecteitherUserHDPorMasterHDPtochange
thepassword,dependingonyourneeds.
–IfyouselectUserHDPmode,followthefollowingstepstochangetheuserharddiskpassword:
1.TypethecurrentuserharddiskpasswordintheEnterCurrentPasswordeldandpressEnter.
2.TypethenewpasswordintheEnterNewPasswordeldandpressEnter;thenretypethe
passwordintheConrmNewPasswordeldandpressEnter.
3.ASetupNoticewindowisdisplayed.PressEnteragaintocontinue.Theuserharddiskpassword
ischanged.
Note:TheharddiskpasswordcannotberemovedinUserHDPmode.
