INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Multi-Tech’s Communication Serial Interface (MCSI2000) which is a serial port
redirector software for Windows® 2000 and XP operating systems. MCSI- pronounced “Mik-
see”, is a software redirector that complies with MCSI/NCSI/NASI de facto standards for
software redirection. It enables discovery, query line status and provides access to the ports on
Multi-Tech’s Remote Access Servers (RAS) using the Multi-Tech’s Asynchronous Gateway
(MAG – proprietary) protocol.
The discovery and line status query features have now been extended to support IPModules on
the network. The IPModule and the acronym SEIP are Multi-Tech’s Serial-to-Ethernet Adapter
with IP (SEIP) protocol that are referred to through out this Guide as an IPModule.
MCSI is extended to choose MAG/Telnet/Raw-TCP mode to access the ports on
RAS/IPModule. The MAG mode operates on Multi-Tech’s RASFinder, CommPlete, and
MultiConnect products.
The IPModule used in a MultiAccess product network only operates in the direct mode.
A brief summary of the extensions and features implemented both on the client and the AG
server on IP Module is listed below:
MCSI2000 CLIENT EXTENSIONS
• Supports discovery and display of the IPModule using MAG Protocol.
• Supports identification of authentication status using MAG protocol.
• Supports manual addition of IPModule and the type of the product can be chosen (RAS,
SEIP).
• Supports adding virtual COM ports during and after installation. Facility to choose
connect-type (MAG or Direct) with respective modes (MAG, Telnet, Raw-TCP) while
adding the port is provided.
• Supports mapping the port. For IPModule, Telnet or Raw-TCP mode can be chosen for
mapping. For RAS products MAG, Telnet or Raw-TCP modes can be chosen for
mapping.
• Supports RFC 2217 compliant Telnet client.
• Supports transparent login to the RAS/IPModule when the port is opened by an
application.
IPMODULE – AG SERVER OPTIONS INCLUDED
• Supports UDP server running on port 526 to respond to the broadcast packet from the
MCSI Client.
• Supports identification as an IPModule.
• Supports sending the status of the port as well as authentication status using a TCP
server running on port 599.
Note: User should take care to enable UDP port 526 and TCP port 599 if they are behind a
Firewall.
